App Store Localization Checklist for Global Release
Use this App Store localization checklist to check metadata, screenshots, languages and upload readiness before a global release.
An App Store localization checklist should check more than translated captions. Before a global release, confirm that the app, store metadata, screenshots and selected storefront languages describe the same product. Save each new localization before uploading its screenshots or previews.
This checklist is for developers preparing an existing app for additional markets. It covers release QA rather than keyword-volume research or a promise of higher downloads. Apple's localization instructions explain the store workflow and when metadata can be edited.
1. Separate app languages from store languages
A language in your app binary and a localization in App Store Connect are different settings. A translated product page does not add a translated interface to the app. Record which languages the released build supports and which store languages you intend to publish.
Make a small release matrix with one row per store localization. Include the app UI language, metadata owner, screenshot set, preview video and person responsible for checking the upload. Use the exact locale shown in App Store Connect rather than treating country and language as interchangeable.
2. Check metadata before designing images
Review the app name, subtitle, description and keywords in context. A literal translation can describe a feature accurately but still sound unfamiliar to the intended reader. Keep product and subscription terminology consistent between your app and the listing.
Check current field limits in the console. Have a reviewer look at the actual submitted text, including line breaks and punctuation, rather than a separate document that may no longer match the release.
3. Match the screenshots to the submitted build
Capture a real workflow from the build you plan to distribute. Check navigation labels, currency, dates, units and sample content. Remove personal data from the demonstration account before capturing images.
If the interface is available in the target language, show that interface. If it is not, do not create a screenshot that implies otherwise. A translated caption can explain an English interface, but the distinction should remain clear.
4. Review caption meaning and layout together
Read captions on the finished artwork. Longer translations can wrap over a device frame or turn a clear headline into three small lines. Check meaning, line breaks and font support together; shortening the translation is often better than shrinking every font.
For Arabic, review right-to-left reading order, punctuation and mixed-direction strings such as product names and numbers. Keep technical tokens readable. For CJK languages, inspect glyphs and spacing instead of assuming the Latin-language layout will work unchanged.
5. Validate each device group and asset type
Use the screenshot size reference to prepare files, then confirm the current accepted dimensions in Apple's specification. Check actual exported pixels, file format and transparency. A filename such as iphone-large.png does not prove that the file fits the large-device slot.
Keep screenshots, app preview videos and App Store header images in separate folders. They use different specifications. For Google Play, keep the feature graphic separate from the screenshot set too.
6. Preserve the story across languages
Compare the sets side by side. The first screenshot should explain the same central task, even if the phrasing differs. Confirm that slide order, feature availability and any depicted account state are consistent.
Avoid replacing a useful feature screenshot with a generic translated title card. Localize the explanation without losing the evidence that the app can perform the task.
7. Save the localization before uploading
In the platform version section of App Store Connect, add the language, enter its metadata and save it. Reopen the language after saving to confirm that it exists on the version you are editing. Then upload the screenshots and previews to that localization.
If the console displays “Please save new locales before uploading screenshots or previews”, use the saved-locale troubleshooting guide. Adding a language on App Information alone may not resolve an unfinished version-localization workflow.
8. Check the console preview before release
Compare the uploaded files with the approved source designs. Check that the selected language and device group are correct, screenshots appear in order and a primary-language fallback has not concealed a missing translated asset.
A successful upload confirms file acceptance, not App Review approval. Keep the final preview and review status separate in the release checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a different screenshot for every country?
Plan around supported store localizations and the experience shown in your app. Countries can share a language, while one country can have several supported languages. Follow the console's current localization and fallback rules rather than assuming a one-to-one mapping.
Can I reuse one design across languages?
Yes, use a shared layout as a starting point. Review every finished version for text expansion, writing direction, font coverage and accurate in-app content. Reusing a layout does not remove the need for language-specific QA.
What should I do after an upload succeeds?
Check the destination language, device group, image order and visible preview. Continue the release process only after those checks. Upload success and formal review approval are separate steps.
Prepare the next release
Start with iOS screenshot templates, create the artwork in the screenshot editor, and complete this checklist against the actual exported files. Store the approved designs and the final console check together so the next update starts from a clear baseline.
